Meet The Doctor

Thomas R. SanGiacomo, DMD

Dr. Thomas SanGiacomo grew up in Norwood, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston.  He received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts majoring in Biology with a minor concentration in European Literature.  He was a member of the varsity soccer team for three years.  After graduating, he worked at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston performing research in cholesterol metabolism.  He returned to Tufts University, this time in the School of Dental Medicine, where he graduated with honors and was inducted into the Omicron Delta Upsilon Honor Society.  He received the Dentsply Award for Distinction in Complete Denture Prosthetics.  Upon graduating, Dr. SanGiacomo remained at Tufts as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Complete Denture Prosthetics and the Chelsea Soldier’s Home and also practiced restorative dentistry in private practice in East Boston.  He completed his residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/University Hospital, at the time, the only Level I Trauma Center in the state.  He elected to pursue an additional year of training as a Fellow in Orthognathic and Temporomandibular Joint Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. 

 

Dr. SanGiacomo was engaged in private practice Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for 16 years in Rhode Island where he was Division Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Roger Williams Medical Center.  He also served on the Board of Trustees to the Rhode Island Dental Association, was President of the Providence District Dental Society, and Assistant Editor for the Rhode Island Dental Journal.  To escape urban sprawl and live in a more rural setting, Dr. SanGiacomo moved his family to Central New York in 2005, taking over the practice of Dr. Joseph Wasileski in Cortland after he retired. Despite rigorous training in orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery and trauma, Dr. SanGiacomo’s professional interests now lean towards implant dentistry, bone grafting and pre-prosthetic treatment of the ageing patient.

 

Dr. SanGiacomo is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a member of the New York State Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a member of the American Dental Association and past president of the Sixth District Dental Society and the Cortland Dental Society.  He has published articles in the Journal of Lipid Research, Biochemistry, The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine Oral Pathology and Oral Surgery, and the Rhode Island Dental Journal

 

Dr. SanGiacomo lives in Central New York with his wife Teresa, their three children, and a never- ending procession of animals. His hobbies include skiing, soccer, cycling and collecting jazz records.  He is a member of the National Ski Patrol and patrols at Song Mountain.
