The Specialty of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery encompasses the diagnosis, medical and
surgical treatment of diseases, defects, and injuries to the
oral/maxillofacial region---maxillofacial refers to the jaws and
face. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon has completed
extensive university and hospital training after dental
school and has been trained and certified in the administration of
local and general anesthesia and sedation within the office
setting. The surgeon's scope includes the extraction of
teeth, surgical removal of impacted teeth, surgical root canal
therapy (apicoectomy), treatment of injuries to the teeth, jaws and
facial bones, preparing the jaws for denture construction,
placement of dental implants, treatment of TMJ disorders, treatment
of pathology (tumors, cysts and infection) of the jaws, and
cosmetic surgery to improve jaw alignment, function, and
appearance. Care Our highly trained
staff consists of an EMT, a licensed phlebotomist, , an LPN,
dental assistants and a medical receptionist to provide for
your every need. We understand that you may be anxious about your

Founded by Dr. Joseph Wasileski, our facility has
been serving Cortland for more than 35 years with doctors

About Your Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeon Dr. Thomas R.
SanGiacomo is a cum laude graduate of Tufts University School of
Dental Medicine. He practiced general dentistry in Boston and
was a clinical instructor at Tufts after he graduated. He
completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and an
additional year of fellowship training in orthognathic and
temporomandibular joint surgery at the prestigious University of
Miami. Dr. SanGiacomo is Board Certified by the Amercan Board
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He was formerly in private
practice in Rhode Island where he was the Division Director of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery at Roger Williams Medical Center in
Providence. His areas of interest include preprosthetic
surgery and dental implantology. He has published numerous articles
on Biochemistry, Prosthodontics, Pathology and Oral Surgery in
international journals as well as commentaries and dental market
analysis in local dental journals. Dr. SanGiacomo is an
active staff member at Cortland Memorial Hospital and
is President of the Cortland County Dental Society. Dr.
SanGiacomo grew up in Massachusetts and lived in Rhode Island for
15 years before moving to Central New York in 2005. He is married
with two daughters and a son. When he is not practicing oral
surgery, Dr. SanGiacomo is a fanatic soccer player, soccer coach,
skier, and supports his daughters at horse shows. A Dedication to
